OpenPass4Climate is an Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnerships project (2022–2025) that evaluates eco-pedagogy as a driver of individual and collective engagement for climate action.
The project introduces a European Open Badges Passport for Climate and the Planet, enabling learners to receive recognition for their contributions to sustainability.
The first project result (PR1) focuses on mapping eco-pedagogical practices across Europe. This work, led by NOVA University Lisbon, identified 118 activities submitted by more than 40 organizations, with higher education institutions representing nearly 73% of contributors.
Methodology
- STARS-inspired methodology – classifying activities as Learning, Action, or Learning & Action.
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – aligning each activity with the global agenda, especially SDG 13 (Climate Action).
- Eco-pedagogy principles – embedding values like sustainability, inclusiveness, justice, and equity.
- GreenComp framework – assessing how activities build the 12 sustainability competences.
Key Findings
- Education at the core: 81% of activities came from educational or governmental institutions.
- Diverse formats: Action projects (33%), workshops (18%), courses, conferences, and campaigns.
- Inclusive access: Nearly all activities were reported as accessible to people with disabilities.
- For all learners: Half targeted adults (18+), while many engaged younger audiences.
- Balanced learning: Half combined theory and practice, linking knowledge with action.
- SDG focus: Most activities referenced SDG 13 (Climate Action), alongside SDG 4 and SDG 11.
- Eco-pedagogical values: Key themes were sustainable development, shared responsibility, and prevention of harm.
- Competence development: All 12 GreenComp competences were addressed to varying degrees.
