PR3 – Open Badges Collection for Climate Competences: Building a Recognition System”

Following the mapping of eco-pedagogical activities (PR1) and the study of student engagement and perceptions (PR2), PR3 focuses on the design and implementation of a badge-based recognition system aligned with the EU’s GreenComp framework.

The system establishes a structured process for validating climate-related learning, inspired by the Council of the European Union’s recommendation on the validation of non-formal and informal learning. It encompasses the identification of learning outcomes, the standardisation of documentation, the evaluation of competences through quizzes and eco-pedagogical activities, and the certification of achievements via digital Open Badges.

A key innovation is the portable online platform that allows learners to request, earn, and showcase badges in four GreenComp macro-areas:

  1. Embodying Sustainability Values
  2. Embracing Complexity in Sustainability
  3. Envisioning Sustainable Futures
  4. Acting for Sustainability

Each badge is issued at bronze, silver, or gold level depending on the learner’s commitment, and a Super Badge recognises comprehensive achievement across all four areas. The badges are designed to be portable, verifiable, and easily integrated into Europass and other recognition systems, supporting both lifelong learning and professional mobility.

Pilot testing with students and stakeholder focus groups confirmed the platform’s usability, clarity, and potential impact, while also guiding improvements such as clearer instructions, enhanced tutorials, and user-friendly communication tools. Tutorials on eco-pedagogical activities, GreenComp, open badges, and the digital passport further support learners and administrators in engaging with the system.

The report demonstrates how open recognition can transform climate education from knowledge-sharing into measurable action and commitment, empowering students across Europe to gain and showcase meaningful sustainability competences.
